Colour consultancy Service

Calm, confident colour decisions, tailored to your home

Colour has an extraordinary influence on how a home feels, yet it’s often one of the most difficult decisions to make with confidence. Paint cards can be misleading, light changes throughout the day, and choices made room by room can leave a home feeling unsettled rather than cohesive.

Our in-home Colour Consultancy service offers considered, professional guidance to help you make colour decisions that feel right - not just individually, but across

your home as a whole. The emphasis is on balance, flow and atmosphere, informed by light, architecture and how you live in the space.

We are an independent interior design studio, based in York. Our advice is never tied to a single paint brand. Instead, we focus on specifying the right colour and finish for your home, selecting from a carefully curated range of trusted manufacturers to achieve a calm, resolved result.

Our Approach to Colour Consultancy

Our Colour Consultancy service is an independent, designer-led colour consultation offered in-home across York and North Yorkshire, with virtual options available for clients further afield.

This is a designer-led, colour consultation, grounded in experience rather than trend.

Rather than overwhelming you with endless options, we narrow choices thoughtfully, explain how colour will behave in your home, and guide you towards decisions that feel calm, cohesive and considered.

Colour decisions are best made with context - not from a fan deck.

What’s included in our Colour Consultancy Service?

Each Colour Consultancy typically includes:

  • An in-home consultation of up to 90 minutes

  • Colour guidance for up to four rooms

  • Consideration of natural and artificial light throughout the day

  • Discussion of how colours relate to existing furniture, flooring and finishes

  • Guidance on appropriate paint finishes for both appearance and longevity

  • Larger painted swatches to help you visualise colours in your space

At the end of the visit, we recommend the most appropriate samples to order so you can test colours properly in your own light before making final decisions.

The aim is clarity - so you can move forward without prolonged testing or second-guessing.

Who is our Colour Consultancy service for?

Our Colour Consultancy service is well suited to clients who:

  • Want reassurance before committing to colour

  • Are feeling uncertain or overwhelmed by choice

  • Want colour to feel cohesive across their home, not piecemeal

  • Value independent, professional judgement over brand-led advice

  • Prefer calm guidance and confident decisions

If your project would benefit from broader design involvement, we’ll always advise honestly and guide you towards the most appropriate service.

She is looking at and flipping through a fan of papers, with a laptop in front of her. The table has various items, including a large vase with white flowers, a candle, a recording microphone, a notebook, and a decorative tray with fabric samples. The background features a window, a painting of an abstract landscape, and some white wall paneling.

How it works

Step 1

Pre-visit questionnaire

Before we visit, you’ll complete a short questionnaire covering the essentials, like your home’s orientation, your preferred style and any colours you already love (or want to avoid). We will also agree which four rooms you would like us to focus our time on.

Step 2

Your home visit

We’ll walk through each pre-agreed room and discuss your preferences in more detail before making our recommendations. We’ll arrange one complimentary sample for each of the rooms to be delivered to you along with guidance on how to test paint samples properly, including tips for applying them, moving them around your space and viewing them in different lights before committing.  We can advise or order additional paint or wallpapering samples at the same time.

Step 3

After our visit

We’ll follow up after a week to talk through your sample preferences and answer any final questions before we place your order. We can also liaise directly with your decorator, recommend a trusted professional or advise on quantities, finishes and colour mixing where appropriate.

“Ann and team provided a fantastic colour scheme for our house which saved on numerous conversations on what colours would work well in our house. Now the renovation is complete, the colours flow from room to room creating a fantastic, restful experience. This service is money well spent.”

Colour Consultancy Service in York & surrounding areas

In-home colour consultations are offered within approximately 20 miles of our studio in North Yorkshire.

If you live further afield, we’d still love to hear from you. In many cases, a virtual colour consultation can offer the same clarity and direction without the need for travel.

Our focus is always on the right approach for your home - not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Independent by design

Unlike colour consultations offered by paint manufacturers, at Middlethorpe Interiors our recommendations are entirely independent.

We are not limited to a single palette or product range. Instead, we specify colours and finishes based on what works best for your home - its light, architecture and character - selecting from a wide range of high-quality manufacturers.

The priority is always the outcome, not the label.

Next Steps

If you’re looking for calm, confident guidance on colour for your home and want decisions to feel settled rather than stressful, we’d be delighted to help.

Colour Consultancy Service - Frequently Asked Questions

  • Paint brand colour consultations focus on colours within their own range.

Middlethorpe Interiors Colour Consultancy service is independent and designer-led. We consider your home as a whole - light, layout, furnishings and flow - and specify the most appropriate colours and finishes without being limited to a single brand.

  • We regularly specify colours from a range of trusted manufacturers, including Little Greene, Farrow & Ball, Edward Bulmer, Paint & Paper Library, Mylands and others.

The choice is always guided by what suits your home best - the quality of the pigment, the finish required, the light in the space and the overall feel you want to achieve - rather than allegiance to one brand.

  • A typical colour consultation covers up to four rooms. The emphasis is on thoughtful, well-resolved decisions rather than rushing through too many spaces at once.

If you’d like support with additional rooms, we can discuss the most appropriate way to structure this.

  • Yes. We bring a curated selection of larger painted swatches to our Colour Consultation to help you visualise how colours behave in your home and light.

Rather than overwhelming you with options, we use these as a reference and, at the end of the visit, recommend the most appropriate samples for you to order and test properly before committing.

  • Yes. For clients outside our usual in-person colour consultancy area of North Yorkshire, a virtual colour consultation can be an excellent alternative and works particularly well when photographs and information are shared in advance.

  • No. We don’t charge mileage as a separate fee.

We offer in-home consultations within our local area and recommend virtual consultations or alternative services where travel would make an in-person visit impractical.

  • At our Colour Consultation we offer clear, confident recommendations, informed by experience and context.

The final decisions are always yours - our role is to simplify the process, remove doubt and help you move forward with confidence.

  • No. The Colour Consultancy service focuses specifically on colour and paint finishes.

If your project would benefit from broader design involvement - such as layouts, furnishings or ongoing coordination - we’ll guide you towards the most appropriate next step.

  • Many clients begin with a Colour Consultancy and continue with us as their project evolves.

If you’d like additional support - from virtual design through to full interior design we’ll outline the options clearly and thoughtfully.

  • Simply get in touch with us at Middlethorpe Interiors and tell us a little about your home and location.

We’ll confirm availability, advise on whether an in-home or virtual colour consultation is most appropriate, and guide you through the next steps.
