Our Interior Design Process

We follow a structured, stage-based interior design process, informed by industry best practice, where decisions are made in the right order and refined as the design develops. This ensures clarity at every stage and allows the design to be carried through consistently from early ideas to completion.

Depending on the scope of your project, our involvement may include:

  • Initial discovery, brief refinement and overall design direction

  • Concept development and creative vision

  • Design development and detailed coordination

  • Finishes, fixtures and material selection

  • Furniture, lighting and bespoke elements where appropriate

  • Ongoing design involvement during implementation to ensure the agreed design intent is delivered to the expected standard

We regularly collaborate with architects, builders and specialist consultants. Where a wider team is not already in place, we can introduce trusted professionals and help assemble a team that suits the scale, complexity and ambition of your project.

Scope, responsibilities and levels of involvement are always clearly defined and agreed from the outset.

Design Leadership and Communication.

We work best when there is mutual trust and clarity. Our role is to guide the design thoughtfully, anticipate issues before they arise, and ensure decisions are made with confidence and care.

Clients value us for:

  • Calm, decisive design guidance

  • Clear and timely communication

  • A proactive approach — we don’t allow issues to linger or become problems

  • High standards upheld throughout the project

  • A sense of reassurance that everything is being handled properly

Why a Staged Interior Design Approach Matters

Interior design decisions are interconnected. When choices are made out of sequence — or responsibility is fragmented — projects can lose momentum, budgets can drift, and the final result can feel unresolved.

A staged approach allows for:

  • Confident decision-making at the right time

  • Better coordination across the wider project team

  • Fewer costly changes later in the process

  • A home that feels cohesive, considered and complete

How it works

Every project begins with a conversation where we get to know a little about you, your space, and what you’re hoping to achieve. We’ll also share a little more about how we work.  It’s an informal conversation designed to help you feel informed, inspired, and confident about the next step.

Phase 1

Brief, site survey & planning considerations

Following an initial online meeting, we start your project with a detailed site visit to understand your space, assess practical considerations and discuss your aspirations. We create a brief to give us a clear understanding of your lifestyle ensuring we make informed decisions from the outset.

Phase 2

Spatial planning & concept design

Using insights from the site survey, we create tailored layouts and initial concepts that reflect your vision and lifestyle. We incorporate any architectural features from architects plans. At this stage, ideas begin to take shape through mood boards, layouts, and reference samples.

Phase 3

Developed design

The concept is refined into detailed designs, including specifications for materials, bespoke joinery and furniture and fixtures. This is a collaborative phase where you’ll see your project come to life, with clarity on every element of your home.

Phase 4

Manufacturing & construction

We collaborate closely with trusted builders, architects and specialist tradespeople and your dedicated Project Manager oversees the entire process, ensuring everything aligns seamlessly with your approved detailed designs.

Phase 5

Procurement of furniture, fixtures & equipment (FF&E)

We source and specify every item with care, from bespoke kitchens and bathrooms, bespoke cabinetry, upholstery and soft furnishings to hardware, flooring, lighting and accessories, ensuring impeccable style, quality and comfort throughout your home.

Phase 6

Installation & handover

We coordinate the installation and styling of all furniture, furnishings and accessories sourced through our studio. For projects involving construction, we work seamlessly alongside your appointed Project Manager, ensuring the FF&E runs smoothly and every finishing touch is in place . Our role is to make sure your home is ready for you to step into, relax and enjoy.

We offer comprehensive design services for corporate projects, combining luxury, comfort and functionality seamlessly.

We work with developers and property investors to add our unique sense of style to residential developments and luxury hotel-style accommodation including high-end holiday lettings.

Full Interior Design Service - Frequently Asked Questions

  • A full-house project or major refurbishment involves thousands of interconnected decisions. Without clear design leadership, those decisions can quickly become fragmented, reactive or overwhelming.

Working with an interior designer brings clarity, cohesion and confidence. At Middlethorpe Interiors, we take the time to understand how you want to live and translate that into a home that feels calm, considered and deeply comfortable. Our role is to guide the process, anticipate challenges, and ensure every element works together as a whole - resulting in a home that feels timeless, balanced and personal.

  • Full Interior Design is best suited to clients planning a whole-house project or a full refurbishment of primary rooms, who value a thoughtful, structured approach.

Our clients are typically looking for a hands-off experience, trusting an experienced studio to guide the design, coordinate decisions and uphold standards throughout a longer-term project. If you’re seeking occasional advice or support with isolated decisions, one of our advisory or virtual services may be a better fit.

  • Ideally, an interior designer is appointed as early as possible - often alongside an architect. Early involvement allows the design to inform layout, flow and functionality from the outset, rather than responding to decisions already made.

That said, if your project is already underway, there may still be value in bringing us on board. An initial conversation will help determine whether full interior design support is appropriate at your current stage.

  • Many of our clients are new to working with an interior designer, and we guide them through the process with clarity and care.

If your project has already started, we’ll take time to understand what’s been completed, identify priorities and advise on the most effective way forward. Our aim is always to bring structure, calm and a cohesive vision to the remaining stages of the project.

  • Your lifestyle, preferences and priorities guide the design, and we value your input. However, many of our clients choose to be largely hands-off, trusting us to lead the design process and manage the detail.

We keep you involved at key decision points while handling the day-to-day coordination, allowing the project to move forward smoothly without becoming overwhelming.

  • Our fees reflect the scope, complexity and duration of the project and are structured around a staged design process.

This approach allows us to resource your project appropriately and provide consistent design leadership from early concept through to completion. Fees are always clearly outlined and agreed before work begins.

  • Every project is different, but as a guide:

    • A full refurbishment of primary rooms may take 6–12 months

    • A full-house project often spans 12 months or more

We’ll always provide a realistic timeline at the outset and work carefully to maintain momentum without compromising quality.

  • We coordinate and manage the interior design and fit-out elements of your project, ensuring the design intent is upheld as work progresses.

We do not act as construction project managers. For projects involving building works or structural alterations, we recommend appointing a dedicated project manager or contractor-led team.

Once works are underway, we offer a Monthly Monitoring service to remain closely involved and ensure interiors are delivered to the agreed standard.

  • Yes. As part of our Full Interior Design service, we take care of procuring the items we specify and overseeing their white-glove installation.

This allows us to ensure everything is ordered correctly, delivered smoothly and installed exactly as intended - protecting the integrity of the design and the quality of the finished home.

For full-service projects, procurement and installation are an integral part of the process rather than an optional stage.

If you’re looking for advice only, or prefer to manage purchasing independently, one of our advisory services may be a better fit.
