How it works
Every project begins with a conversation where we get to know a little about you, your space, and what you’re hoping to achieve. We’ll also share a little more about how we work. It’s an informal conversation designed to help you feel informed, inspired, and confident about the next step.
Phase 1
Brief, site survey & planning considerations
Following an initial online meeting, we start your project with a detailed site visit to understand your space, assess practical considerations and discuss your aspirations. We create a brief to give us a clear understanding of your lifestyle ensuring we make informed decisions from the outset.
Phase 2
Spatial planning & concept design
Using insights from the site survey, we create tailored layouts and initial concepts that reflect your vision and lifestyle. We incorporate any architectural features from architects plans. At this stage, ideas begin to take shape through mood boards, layouts, and reference samples.
Phase 3
Developed design
The concept is refined into detailed designs, including specifications for materials, bespoke joinery and furniture and fixtures. This is a collaborative phase where you’ll see your project come to life, with clarity on every element of your home.
Phase 4
Manufacturing & construction
We collaborate closely with trusted builders, architects and specialist tradespeople and your dedicated Project Manager oversees the entire process, ensuring everything aligns seamlessly with your approved detailed designs.
Phase 5
Procurement of furniture, fixtures & equipment (FF&E)
We source and specify every item with care, from bespoke kitchens and bathrooms, bespoke cabinetry, upholstery and soft furnishings to hardware, flooring, lighting and accessories, ensuring impeccable style, quality and comfort throughout your home.
Phase 6
Installation & handover
We coordinate the installation and styling of all furniture, furnishings and accessories sourced through our studio. For projects involving construction, we work seamlessly alongside your appointed Project Manager, ensuring the FF&E runs smoothly and every finishing touch is in place . Our role is to make sure your home is ready for you to step into, relax and enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
We recognise that embarking on a full or partial renovation can feel overwhelming. Many of our clients come to us unsure of where to start. They're often unclear about where to prioritise their investment, they don’t have access to the right contacts, or they’ve already begun and find themselves overburdened by constant questions from contractors.
That’s where we come in.
Working with an interior designer brings clarity, creativity, and cohesion to your project. At Middlethorpe Interiors, we take the time to understand how you want to live, and translate that into spaces that are not only beautiful, but deeply personal and practical.
We guide you, and where appointed, your Project Manager on the details — from layout and finishes to sourcing, procurement, and installation saving you time and helping you avoid costly mistakes. Our experience allows us to bring fresh ideas, trusted contractors, skilled suppliers, and master craftsmen to the table, along with a well-honed process that guides you from concept to completion with confidence.
In short, we help you create a home that feels considered, timeless, and entirely your own.
-
Ideally the interior designer should be appointed at the same time as the architect, getting your design team involved before planning permission and any build work starts means we can collaborate with architects and builders to make sure the space is configured in the most effective way for the way you want to live.
-
Don’t worry, there’s still lots of value we can add to you and your project and plenty of scope for creativity around room flow and function. If you’ve already started, and need a safe pair of hands to guide you, reach out. We can arrange a complimentary call so you can talk us through the project milestones and decisions you need to make so we can help you achieve the best possible outcome
-
Before scheduling a visit to your property, we recommend an initial meeting either at our studio just outside York or online. This first conversation is complimentary and a chance for us to get to know one another, explore your project ambitions, and ensure we're the right fit. We believe that open, thoughtful communication is at the heart of every successful design collaboration, and this step allows us to align on vision, values, and approach.
Following this, the next step is a working consultation at your home or site. During this two-hour consultation , we’ll walk through the space, review any plans, and discuss your lifestyle, aspirations, design priorities, and investment level in detail. This session lays the foundation for a considered, well-informed design brief.
-
You're in good hands. We guide you through each phase from concept to installation and finishing touches, managing every detail so the process feels clear, organised and enjoyable from start to finish. To see our typical full interior design process see above.

We work collaboratively and always welcome your ideas, but we’re equally happy to take the lead if your time is limited. Either way, your vision and lifestyle guide everything we do.
-
Every project is different, Depending on the size of your project it could be anywhere from 3 months to 2 years. A single room refurbishment, including the design process might take 3-4 months depending on supplier and contractor availability. A full house build can take up to 2 years.
We’ll always provide a realistic timeline at the outset. We take care to deliver on time without compromising quality.
-
At Middlethorpe Interiors, we coordinate and manage the design and coordination of your interior. While we don’t offer full construction project management, we do coordinate key elements specific to the interior fit-out, including the scheduling and installation of furnishings, finishes, and specialist items. We also oversee logistics such as deliveries and client-side preparation, particularly during the final phases of a project.
For projects involving building works or structural alterations, we strongly recommend appointing a dedicated project manager as part of your contractor team. Their role is to coordinate trades, manage site timelines, and act as the central point of contact across the broader construction process. They also help ensure compliance with our Industry Regulations, which apply to most domestic renovation projects. These regulations place legal responsibilities on clients, designers, and contractors to plan and manage health and safety from the outset. We’re happy to make introductions to professionals we trust. Once your project is physically underway we offer a Monthly Monitoring service that enables us to keep tabs on construction and ensure it is being executed as we designed. This is a meticulous service that is focused on delivering excellent results in a personable and diplomatic fashion.
-
We take time to get to know you and ensure the design reflects your tastes and needs. But if something doesn’t feel right, we’ll refine it together at the concept stage. Your home should feel like you, not us.
Our concept and detailed design presentations are the result of a considered and collaborative process. We include one round of revisions at both the concept and detailed design stages, based on your feedback. These are intended to refine and align the design with your expectations, ensuring your home reflects your lifestyle, aesthetic, and practical needs.
Should further revisions be requested beyond this stage, these will be charged at our standard hourly rate, with an estimate provided in advance.
-
We conduct snagging alongside the Project Manager to ensure any issues are identified and addressed promptly. Our monthly monitoring service allows us to stay on top of potential issues as they arise, preventing things from progressing too far before they’re noticed. While contractors, trades, and the Project Manager are typically appointed by the client, we are always here to support you in resolving any snagging issues. If problems do arise, we’ll work closely with you and your team to resolve them to the high standard you expect.
-
Our fees are tailored to the scale and scope of each project. We’ll provide a clear proposal after our initial consultation so you understand what’s included and how we can work within your budget.
-
Our Full Design Service is a comprehensive offering that coordinates every aspect of your project, from concept through to completion, including project coordination and procurement. This ensures a cohesive vision and smooth execution.
If you'd prefer to take on some aspects of your project, our Virtual Design Service or Design Concierge may be better suited, allowing you to manage certain elements while we provide guidance and support. However, we always recommend keeping the procurement stage within our hands to ensure the quality and consistency of the design are upheld throughout the process.
