Clifton Green, York
Biophilic design in a victorian villa
Some homes already whisper their own story. This beautiful Victorian villa in York had all the elegance and heritage, plus owners with a real love of antiques and art. Our role was to listen, curate and gently bring it to life for today.
The guest room began with characterful pieces our clients already cherished – the bed and much-loved Victorian pine furniture. Rather than replace, we refreshed. New handles, a considered paint finish and a soft green palette instantly lightened the room and let the collected pieces sing. With gorgeous views across the walled garden, it felt natural to “bring the outside in”: blossom tones, fresh greens and light, airy textures. We embraced a little “more is more” layering for depth and warmth. Colefax & Fowler’s Snow Tree adds a delicate botanical note, set against a tactile wallcovering so pattern and texture meet in a gentle conversation.
History at the Threshold
Halls are never just a way through. They’re the first impression and the promise of what’s to come. Here, the original encaustic Victorian floor tiles became our starting point. Their rich, time-softened colours informed everything: the deep red repeated on the walls in Zoffany Venetian Red, the ochre echoed in the bespoke carpet and stair runner, and a tailored edging that ties every floor shade together.
This was a true piece of craftsmanship. With no perfectly square lines to rely on, every step was templated by hand, then individually cut and sewn so the runner sits flawlessly with the geometry of the tiles. After a decade of seeking a designer who would treat the fabric of the house with care; today, every detail feels naturally at home.. Hunter & Hyland poles and beautifully balanced Lewis & Wood fabrics complete the story – classic, tactile and made to last.
